Sony must be feeling some pressure from the Micro Four Thirds partners and Samsung. They wanted to let everyone know they've got something in the works. It's a strategic move. And I think it actually worked for them since it ended up being the biggest announcement of PMA this year. That's pretty sad, actually - that the biggest announcement of the show was for a camera that doesn't yet exist. We'll see how they do on execution, now...

Oooooops, I asked the question before hearing you say there is no release date. Bummer. Why show something and offer almost zero details about it (talking about Sony, not you).
-
Any idea when these will be coming out Photo John? Also, any word on what the kit lens will be?

Check the link in the description for a report on all of those cameras at PMA. Not so sure if the Samsung will really be better. Olympus says the actual light-sensitive area on the Samsung pixels is the same size as the M43 cameras. And I don't think anyone has actually tested the AF yet.

Also look out for samsung and their nx10 evil camera. Just as light as the m4/3 cameras but with better af, build-in evf and it has a bigger sensor

Yup. One thing about the 4/3 system is it performs quite badly even at mid iso settings.
Slightly Larger?? if double the size is slightly large.. than sure...

@geginig Yes, the APS-C sensor is much larger than a Four Thirds sensor. However, it's the actual pixel size that matters. I've heard that the pixels on Samsung's NX10 sensor are actually the same size as those on the Four Thirds sensor. That would minimize the value of the larger sensor. I haven't used the Samsung yet so I can't comment on the image quality. And we'll have to wait and see what Sony produces before passing judgment.

@PhotographyREVIEW Pixel size is not the only thing that matters and is related to sensor size vs pixel count. Since the Samsung has more megapixels than the 4/3 counterparts what you lose in pixel size you gain in resolution. Preliminary tests of the NEX5 show the Dynamic range, resolution and noise characteristics to be significantly better than the 4/3 cameras. This is appears to be, for the time being, a 4/3 killer.

@tbcass Thanks for the comment and info about the new Sony. I always recommend evlauating image quality with prints in order to work in the resolution differences. I'm looking forward to getting a Sony NEX camera for testing. Watch for the video!
