Under the direction of MassDOT the most ambitious highway replacement project to date took place during the Summer of 2011 along I-93 in the town of Medford, Massachusetts just outside of Boston, MA.
The 93Fast14.org project replaced 14 4-lane interstate I-93 highway bridges in just 10 weekends under the joint venture of Kiewit Construction and J.F. White Contracting Co.
A typical 55-hour weekend closure began at 10PM on Friday night and ended at 5 AM on Monday morning. Each weekend went exactly according to plan despite unusually heavy traffic into Boston early on to celebrate the win of the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Finals and subsequent victory parade.
Phase 1: Reroute and redirect traffic
Phase 2: Completely demolish and remove each 4 lane, 3 span interstate bridge in its entirety
Phase 3: Install precast re-bar reinforced modular concrete panels, making up the new bridge deck.
Phase 4: Tie the panels together using an interlacing rebar
Phase 5: Pour concrete
Phase 6: Re-open high way and redirect traffic onto new bridge.
Great work Steve. Hope to see you in Boston next year when they replace the River Street bridge in Hyde Park. Happy Holidays.
