Shingon Buddhist ritual. The chapters of the Great Mahaparinirvana Sutra are called out and the sutra is open in a splay, NOT READ! The effect is supposed to be the same as reading the sutras. This ceremony is an example of the aesthetic meditations, stressing the importance of ceremony over "study".Gogoku-ji is a wonderful temple. They are very generous to the Tibetan community in Japan. Visit this wonderful landmark the next time you are in Tokyo.
