ELO was sucessful but at a price,Jeff Lynne was not keen on touring as he was happy going in the studio but the tecord company wanted more tours and albums. In 1981 Jeff wanted to call Time but his contract meant he had to make 3 more before he could stop.Secret Messages was set with problems, the feud with Kelly Groucutt was not a good move.Eventually after pressure from the record company the intended double album was stripped down to a single album but caused controversy when folk complained o

The audio was recorded with a cam recorder during a press conference.

Jeff Lynne's music has acted as a soundtrack to my life (I'm 44 now). Everytime I think I've heard everything he's done I discover another great posting (thank God for YouTube).
This track, along with 'Hello My Old Friend' are quite possibly two of the best songs never to appear on an official ELO album (notwithstanding compilations). I would absolutely love to see Secret Messages in its original double LP format released - what a thrill that would be!

Great song! It's good to hear ELO (whom I consider the Beatles' true successor) to pay tribute in such a fantastic way, even if it was never officially released.

I like it :)

@UK31337 I agree with you, except about the double album. There WAS enough material for it to be a double, but for some reason (and much to Jeff Lynne's dismay), the record company refused to allow ELO another double album. Lynne was hoping to have fulfilled his contractual obligation with a double Secret Messages, as he wanted to move on from ELO.

I'm not surprised they left this song out. It's pretty bad and definitely nothing like as good as the rest of Secret Messages, and I don't think they had enough material to make SM a double album after all. I don't think releasing a whole song plugging a different band is a good idea, either - it would be like Elton John singing about how amazing Billy Joel is. It's just pointless fawning sycophancy and would undermine everything else ELO had done and achieved.

@garymaher Jeff Lynne was unusual as a songwriter. Most songwriters write music to go along with lyrics. Jeff Lynne wrote lyrics to go along with his music. He almost always finished recording the music before writing the lyrics. That's why ELO's lyrics were seldom ever "deep".

@terminusj I wholeheartedly agree with you!
ahem , may i say it is a finished song, i think finnmove thinks its a demo because it sounds tinny because its recorded off a tape/video player a bootleg if you like put the orignal I understand was a digital recording in just as high fidelity recording as the rest of the secret messages album

You are right. The audio quality is poor because it was recorded with a tape/video player. This song is FINISHED.
