Charles Best, CEO of DonorsChoose.org speaking about his own path of service at the Princeton Project 55 Moments of Obligation Panel (Princeton Reunions 2009). In 2009-10, Princeton Project 55 celebrates 20 years of engaging alumni in the public interest. PP55 has placed over 7 yearlong Princeton fellows at DonorsChoose.org.
Charles Best founded DonorsChoose.org at Wings Academy, a public high school in the Bronx where he was a social studies teacher for five years. He formulated the concept of DonorsChoose.org during a lunch conversation with colleagues, and his students volunteered to help start the organization. DonorsChoose.org, a web-based charity where donors select specific needs listed by teachers, has been growing ever since. By end of 2008 DonorsChoose.org coordinated the giving of over $29 million to more than 1.8 million students in more than 50 states.
