Moderato e maestoso (2/2)

This movement is probably my favourite from the symphony. Especially the last four minutes or so, so beautiful, but right at the end, so unresolved. Please, I beg you listen to it! Please tell me your opinion of this amazing piece!

As well as paying tribute to Elgar in these videos, we also are paying respect to the fantastic conductor, Sir Edward Downes who died recently. He commited assisted suicide with his wife, Lady Joan Downes, in Switzerland, 10th July 2009. Rest in Peace.

It is a fantastic performance!

  • The last four minutes are indeed the best part of symphony.

  • I know! So beautiful, made me cry first time! dumdumdumduuuum, if you hate the piece so much, please just don't listen to it.

  • @fortissimo25 I feel the same way! It is sometimes so hard between the two of them because they are both so beautiful!

  • je ne connaisait pas cette symphonie jusqu'a présent... et je suis bien content de l'avoir découverte!

  • i absolutely LUV this movement over the rest for this symphony! and i still cannot choose between tchaikovsky and elgar, who's orchestral writing i like better! this is amazing! i especially love the unbearibly beautiful trove of crescendoing phrases starting at 4:08 - 4:25. and who knew a two-note phrase could be so beautiful and breath-taking after that part, tear tear!!!

and i love the triumphant, exhaulted sound at 3:25! thank u for posting this amazing piece of art!

  • The French, who are not at all adventurous in the field of classical music, know almost nothing of Elgar. I think they are missing a lot for that Symphony is a major masterpiece......I'm not even sure it was ever performed in France!

I was shocked by the news of Edward Downes' tragic death. He was a great, if underated, conductor and a wonderful accompanist.....
