A festival held on Girl's Day (March 3) every year throughout Japan to pray for the health and wellbeing of girls as they grow up. Families set up elaborate tiered displays of ornate dolls for their daughters and granddaughters, and as the years pass the focus of their prayers turns to finding a mate for their dear singleton.

At Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, the festival retains the ancient custom of floating simple dolls on straw mats down the stream that runs through the temple grounds. Very Old Skool, with Heian era costumes, including the fabled but very real 12-layer kimono.
