_~ ♥ ~_

My young love said to me,
"My mother won't mind
And my father won't slight you
For your lack of kin."

She stepped away from me
And she moved through the fair
And fondly I watched her
Move here and move there
And then she went homeward
Just one star away
Like the swan in the evening
Moves over the lake

Last night she came to me
My dead love came in
So softly she came
That her feet made no din
And she laid her hand on me
And this she did say
"It will not be long, love"
And she moved through the fair

  • it is kin... not kind* kin is a type of money (or what was known as money in the time period this was written.

  • @mrsprofJones Fixed the lyrics! Thank you.

  • I have to disagree with everyone saying Celtic Womans version is better. I think Hayley Westenra sings it beautifully, and this arrangement is much closer to the traditional arrangement, which has a very sad, ominous feel, as well as being beautiful. Celtic womans sounds like Enya.

  • Her voice is powerful and pure but I honestly prefer Celtic Woman's version of this song. Meav sang it with all her invisible wings of angels, making us float in heaven through her voice. By The Way, I loved Hayley's performance in "Scarborough Fair" when she was with Celtic Woman. Her version of that song is the best.

  • @lovelycelticopera actually I am pretty sure it is neither kin nor kind but KINE - it means cattle in old english and it make best sence, dont you think?

  • @lovelycelticopera the lyric is "kine" which is an old term for cattle

  • @lovelycelticopera

Could be lack of "kine" meaning cattle

  • this is beautiful but Sinead O'Conner has the best version of this song ever!!

  • @msprofjones --i clearly should read older posts! cheers!

  • @mrsprofJones its kine as in cattle or lack thereof !:)

  • @mrsprofJones It can also be "kind" in some versions, as in "Payment in Kind" which is goods, comodities, skills and services. Kine is the other version which could be cattle. Since it was never written down until later on and we don't know the composer it could be anything.

  • @TaoPiet Hayley is about 1000 above the x-factor, the x-factor is a bunch of lowly desperate morons

  • Ok, ok. I love Hayley and this version is more irishey, but....Celtic Woman's is better. :)

  • This is very very lovely. Thanks very much!
