I'll be honest with you, I picked up this album solely because I was interested in hearing a jazz trombonist, and how well it would work. After listening to Curtis Fuller, I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised at the results. Thus I present to you Fuller's first album for Blue Note: The Opener.
Enjoy!
I think it's time to pop open that new bottle of whiskey.

@56conn6h Umm, well I wont doubt that Curtis has his place among great jazz trombonists , but to say he was the best of ballad players is a little far. No offense, but his interpretations of ballads are a little off of what would be considered the norm for a true "ballad player". Think Tommy Dorsey and Urbie Green. Much more lush, with a brilliant, dazzling high range and slide vibrato. That is the true definition of a "ballad player"

Curtis was one of the best of the ballad players amongst the greats of trombone jazz. And what a sound! He was playing an Olds Opera at the time of thie recording. One heck of a big horn.
Thanks for sharing!

Curtis plays some sweet 'n' soft stuff, with a big, full tone - & in total control of his chops. Love this tune!
Thanks!
