@imabadspeler ok when i say air and water you know what i mean you even say "extract oxygen from the air." that is what every living animal does, extracts oxygen from its soundings if it cant do this it dies. many crabs live exclusively on land and cant go under water because they don't have gills. a gill is defined as
"a respiratory organ found in many aquatic organisms that extracts dissolved oxygen from water" some animals have special gills that (as long as they're wet) can get oxygen from
@manta965 they don't breathe air...They breath oxygen. Oxygen is found in water and in air. Land crabs have modified gills which allow them to extract oxygen from the air.
@imabadspeler no they all breath but they don't have gills some breath air others breath water if a crab with gills come out of the water it can live for a while as long as its gills are wet(they can breath small amounts of air.. a land crab can hold its breath for a little bit but if under water to long will die because they have no way of breathing
@12fishguy ok if it is a land crab it doesn't have gills so obviously doesn't need any added salt because it cant breath under water (it might have babies in water but it doesn't live there) now if it does have gills it doesn't need to dry off the gills need to keep wet "drying off" would kill it
they need low end brackish water to survive (specific gravity ranging from 1.004 to 1.008 ppt). they will only live for about a year if they don't. they also need to be able to get out of the water to breath and dry off
@12fishguy mine has been in FRESH water for a year.

@manta965 the air only some aquatic crabs have this as land crabs don't have gills being they don't live in water and have no use for gills
also breathing is defined as "Breathing is the process that moves air[/water] in and out of the lungs[/over the gills]"
