Awesome fight, I really want to get this game for PSP, (for those who don't know, this game is in Gradius Collection), if i did get this game, I would probably use Vic Viper.

The Gradius Collection version of this game has slow-down, most notably during the bosses on stages 3 and 4, whereas the original PS1 version doesn't have any at all. Just FYI.

I use Double for the whole game, only picking up a Laser for the boss rush if the power-up bar lands on it for long enough for me to claim one. Having a level 2 double makes this game a whole lot easier... at least, that's what I find anyway.
