Ecstasy- Narconon Drug Education- Ecstasy Addiction

Narconon presents education on Ecstasy addiction and ecstasy abuse.

Narconon is a non-traditional drug rehab and drug education center. Here are the facts on Ecstasy:

Slang or Street Names: Ecstasy, XTC, X, Adam, Clarity, Lover's Speed

Chemically, MDMA (Ecstasy) is similar to the stimulant amphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. MDMA (Ecstasy) can produce both stimulant and mild sensory-altering effects.

Methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA), and paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) are chemically similar to MDMA (Ecstasy), are sometimes found in ecstasy tablets, and can produce deleterious health effects.

MDMA (Ecstasy) is usually taken orally, via a tablet or capsule. Its effects last approximately 3 to 6 hours, though depression, sleep problems, and anxiety have been reported for days to weeks afterwards.

MDMA (Ecstasy) can produce a significant increase in heart rate and blood pressure and a sense of alertness similar to that associated with amphetamine use.

MDMA (Ecstasy) can cause a marked increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), which may further be exacerbated by hot and crowded conditions characteristic of the rave environment. Hyperthermia can lead to liver, kidney, and cardiovascular system failure.

MDMA (Ecstasy) can interfere with its own metabolism (breakdown), so repeated use over a short interval of time can lead to especially harmful levels in the body.

Ecstasy users can become dehydrated, prompting increased water consumption. In some cases, this has led to the problem of "water intoxication" or hyponatremia, a potentially fatal condition in which excessive water consumption causes a dramatic decrease in electrolytes. MDMA can affect the hormone that regulates the amount of sodium in the blood, which can also cause hyponatremia.

In animal studies, repeated administration of MDMA (Ecstasy) was found to produce long-lasting, perhaps permanent, damage to the neurons that release serotonin. In humans, chronic use of MDMA has been associated with memory impairment, which may indicate damage to the parts of the brain involved in memory processing.

Recent animal studies have shown that binge use of Ecstasy is toxic to the heart. Health effects observed included arrhythmia, heart muscle damage, and reductions in heart rate and blood pressure. (Initially, MDMA increases heart rate and blood pressure, but following repeated use, this effect is reversed.)

Newborn rats exposed to MDMA develop impairments of spatial learning and memory that are seen when the rats become young adults. The newborn stage of rodent brain development is analogous to late third trimester in humans.

NIDA's 2003 Monitoring the Future (MTF) study reported that 2.1 percent of 8th-graders, 3.0 percent of 10th-graders, and 4.5 percent of 12th-graders had used MDMA (Ecstasy) in the 12 months prior to the survey. This is a decrease from 2001 peak rates of 3.5, 6.2, and 9.2 percent, respectively.

*MDMA (Ecstasy) abuse has been reported across the country, including most of the 21 areas that are monitored by NIDA's Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG), a network of researchers that provide ongoing community-level surveillance of drug abuse. CEWG cities in which MDMA use has been reported include: Chicago, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, Boston, Detroit, New York, St. Louis, Dallas, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Newark, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.

  • bullshit propaganda. how could you ever put marijuana with ecstasy and meth u dumb bitch. marijuana is a great thing not a drug... a plant. the drugs at the pharmacy are the worst. fuck you aunt she was doin meth

  • Poison ivy is also a plant but please don't smoke that either. Thanks for your comments.

  • You need to get your facts straight before making a video on good and bad drugs....and you have to understand that we are all energy..marijuana in a concentrated oil form extracted from the plant will cure cancer and a number of diseases....now when it comes to prescription drugs 'the good drugs" as you call them are the ones that actually kill you....when people die on ecstasy its usually be cause they completely dehydrate....so get your facts straight

  • This is true, prescription drugs can also be abused. From what I know prescription marijuana foes not cure cancer, but allows people to get over the side effects of chemo-therapy. thanks for your comments.

  • You have good intentions here but your message is the wrong one. The most important message to be learned is responsibility. I personally think all drugs should be legalized and regulated and taken out of the hands of criminals (that do not ask for any ID). Take away the majority of the street gangs and Drug cartels money and stop the senseless killings. Educate our children and adults on the dangers of these substances and deal with addiction with doctors not lawyers.

  • Thank you for your comment. Undoubtedly drug cartels and gangs contribute to much of the crime committed.

  • that was really well said. Thanks you.

  • I really agree with you on the point of not attacking the users with criminal actions because of drug abuse. Way too many folks in prison for stuff like that and all that happens is more drug addiction. However, I think that honest, clear and factual education about drugs is the best deterrent. I also believe that we have got to get the legal drug pushers out of our schools. Good grief, someone fidgets and they get a prescription for amphetamines (Ritalin, Adderall, etc). Very bad example.

  • does anyone have panic attacks/anxiety due to ecstasy? Is anyone depressed because of ecstasy? Holla at me

  • Your points have merit, thank you for your comments. Whether drugs are legal or not, the fact remains that too many people become addicted. Agreed that drug education is the best solution.
