  • Funny. I remember as a child watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and being mesmerized by the way he moved. I hated the character (was supposed to) but was fascinated by the actor underneath it all. Brilliant. Thanks for this.

  • You are welcome, thank you for watching. He was a marvellous performer.

  • How could such a charming man terrify me as a child? Very easily it seems ;-)

  • I remember chitty chitty bang bang when i was little and he was the child catcher and i was scared to death of him!

  • Thanks for posting this. Wonderful, brilliant artist and a gentleman.

  • @miniplus Great post! I agree. Never heard anybody refer to Robert as epic in this, but when I think about it, he absolutely was epic. Flawless line delivery, amazing charisma, scary, beautiful, frightening body movement and a great voice and facial characterization to boot. Epic indeed!

  • What's the music at the beginning?

  • He seems to have an preliminary concept of the Child Catcher role that is actually incorrect. As it turns out, he succeeds in catching them. Perhaps there were script changes.

He was epic in that role. It's one of the all-time great supporting-character portrayals. In fact, it's in my top three, along with Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters and Stephen Tobolowsky in Groundhog Day.

  • I wonder if he re-cruted dancers the same way he took children in CCBB. =/

  • I just noticed something he was born in 1909 and its 2009 he wouls've been 100 this year!!
