Nodar Kumaritashvili Tried To Slow Down before fatal crash in 2010 Olympic Luge.wmv

You can see, while he's coming around the corner, that he is trying to slow himself down by putting his right hand and foot down on the ice. With his left hand up he appears to be bracing for a crash. It is terribly sad to see.

After thinking about what happened I believe that his efforts to slow down were too successful. I think he slowed too much and came down off the wall at a steeper angle than he was aiming for and this lead him to go across the track and hit the corner - which is what lead to the awful bounce into the poles.

The song is "A Day In The Life" by The Beatles and performed by Jeff Beck (and his band) from the DVD "Live at Ronnie Scott's".

My opinion is: This crash was, like most crashes, a result of pilot error. However, the course should be built with the knowledge that crashes will occur and they should be made safe enough to allow the pilots/racers to survive a high-speed crash and come back to race another day.

Yes, there is a lot of risk in this sport - like in most racing - and death is always a possibility. The pilots know this. However, this is not "bloodsport". There needs to be room for error. Stong measures need to be taken by the course designers/builders to mitigate risks to make the sport as safe as it can be without taking away from the sporting element of it.

No doubt course designers and sporting officials will learn from this and apply it to other similar courses. It's just too bad it has to happen this way.

My statement was only meant to defend Canada but to be realistic about it - there are some parts of Canada (including Toronto) - that aren't that great but there are many parts of Canada that are great too. Perhaps you're confusing me with keravankauhu who claims that Canada is a ghetto - which is kind of an ironic statement coming from someone who, from what I can tell, lives in Scotland. Canada is not perfect but it is one of the safest and best countries in the world to live in. It has its pros and cons, just like everywhere else. I don't hear many positive remarks about Scotland, but who am I to judge?

@keravankauhu That's a VERY broad statement. Canada is a large and diverse country and for sure you will see good and bad, rich and poor, developed and dilapidated. It all depends on where you go. I'm sure there are lots of parts of Scotland that aren't too pretty either.
