Performance from 1987 or 1988. This song was a mega hit for Dusty Springfield in 1966 ( #1 in the UK,and #4 in the US). Brenda Lee covered it the same year on her "Coming On Strong" album. It is an Italian song, "Io che non vivo (senza te)", in English - "I, who can't live (without you)", which Springfield saw performed at San Remo by Pino Donaggio and Jody Miller. In 1970, Elvis Presley's version reached #11 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the AC chart.

Music by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini
English lyrics by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell.

Lyrics as sung by Brenda Lee:

When I said I needed you, you said you would always stay
It wasn't me who changed but you, and now you've gone away
Don't you know that now you've gone, I'm left here on my own
and I have to follow you and beg you to come home

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, believe me, I can't help but love you
But believe me, I'll never tie you down

Live alone with just a memory, my life is dead and so unreal
There's nothing left for me, there's nothing left for me

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, believe me,

Ooooh,

You don't have to say you love me, just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever, I will understand
Believe me, believe me, believe me

Please excuse the blurry video, but I thought the vocal performance was worth posting. Video is from 1987 or 1988.

  • STANDIN OVATION FOR THIS ONE ...I would hate to have to pick between Miz Brenda, Dusty and Elvis.each carried this off to the max in their own way.

Lets just give them all a their rightful dues....

  • i can't beleive that we have 2 stupid people in this world who clicked on dislike....

  • A great song to dance with your love of you're life.

  • I wonder if it was the same year that Maryann Faithful did a song or two. The white suit looks similiar?

  • @cardiffbluesgirl : I promise not to bother you again, but have to pick up on your point about Mr.Thomas. I remember saying to my mum many years ago when Peter effectively gained control of Cardiff RFC that he would be the ruination of the club. My personal view is that I was correct. It's never been the same since. I watched them playing the Ospreys last night on City's football pitch. What a comedown.

It's such a shame that money dictates everything.

    Have a happy New Year.

    Best wishes.

  • @beaubarri am a huge fan of Dusty Springfield and she is the fav version for me,but I love Brenda Lee and all her hit songs are fantastic. I think 50s and 60s music will always be the best for me. have been a blues fan since the good old days and watched through the great years with Gareth etc. dont like them being with the footie ground. but its like football these days, just a business. maybe Peters pies will give in and go back one day. keep rockin round the Xmas tree.

  • @cardiffbluesgirl : Just came across your posting. As a former Cardiff player 1968/69 I couldn't resist responding. I bought my first Brenda record in 1958,and have acquired a fairly comprehensive collection of her records over the years. She shares a place in my heart with Mireille Mathieu and Judith Durham, all with such unique and wonderful voices.Three such normal and lovely people who genuinely appreciate their fans. All still performing.

Beautiful music affects us all so deeply.

    Regards.

  • @zer0cooL7 Ilove this song!,Miss Brenda Lee brings so many memories, Daniel

  • First of all, let me put my hand up to being a BIG Brenda Lee fan, but Brenda knocks spots off Dusty's version. I watched this then watched Dusty's version. There is no comparison in my mind, as oceanbound222 says, she knocks this out of the park.

  • Brenda Lee's songs remind me of my high school days.Beautiful songs indeed!

  • Good live version but nothing comes close to the blinding beauty and power of Dusty singing this in 1966.
