In September, 1864, a distinguished gathering of dignitaries arrived in the quiet harbour of Charlottetown, in the colony of Prince Edward Island. They were there to discuss the merits of a union embracing what was then Upper and Lower Canada, and to draft a form of Government for such a union. In these years, Canada's population was 3,500,000, centered mostly in the East.
These gentlemen first assembled on September 4, and from this initial 1864 meeting came the nation to be known as 'Canada' uniting it on July 1, 1867 the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Prince Edward Island, the neutral first meeting ground, entered the union some years later, as did the provinces in Canada's then uncharted Western frontier. Newfoundland became the 10th province by abandoning its British colony status in 1948.
To help commemorate the first historic Charlottetown meeting, the people of Price Edward Island are welcoming visitors from all over the continent in a year-long celebration. The album is a collection of original music from the four original founding provinces of Canada, and provides the resident and visitor alike with an enjoyable memento of P.E.I.'s Confederation Centennial.
