The rock around the refuge was less compact than the rest of the mountain. In fact, one of the main concerns was that the whole refuge collapsed when the drill bit punched through it.
After 66 trips, some debris started to fell off from the end of the tunnel, looking more like a funnel than a perfect cilinder. You can clearly check in other footages, how the capsule swivels a bit during landing and pull out.

It is not a perfect tunnel...or a straight angle hole. In fact the hole goes through a few caverns as well and changes angles constantly that is why only the first few meters have steel casing (from the surface). The rest is uneven rock walls. Hope that helps.
