Formula One cars use semi-automatic sequential gearboxes with six or seven forward gears and one reverse gear. The driver signals gear changes using paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel and electro-hydraulics perform the actual change as well as throttle control. Clutch control is also performed electro-hydraulically except from and to a standstill when the driver must operate the clutch using a lever mounted on the back of the steering wheel.

  • Most of the "FIA Regulations" on 08' was so stupid for me.....

  • @Slashbag69 well worded, unfortunately, youtube displays the massive ego and pent up frustration in our current society, especially in youth.

  • The only logic i can make is that the gears and come together so quickly that there is some sort of bouncing of the gears or something like that. Or that yes, it is the traction control.. maybe coming in switching on and off the throttle extremely quick to not lose traction when the driver pushes the acceleration pedal down hard when the next gear is engaged.. coz the revs will go down a bit when they shift.. but even still it wouldnt be that much of a gap.. coz the gear change is almost instant

  • @houro19 I have wondered slash do wonder the same thing. I'm thinking that it must be something to do with the TC, but I can't really imagine what relation there could be between the gearchanges & the TC. ??? If only I had Steve Matchett's cell number.

  • @danthemanpatrick Yeah the newer models dont have that noise..

its just a really smooth quick transition.. wonder why the pre 08 ones made that noise.. :P

  • @houro19 I think I know what you're talking about. But I've noticed that I only hear this noise on cars with traction control [pre-'08]. Have you heard this noise that you're talking about coming from an '08 or later car?

  • Why does the gearbox make that high-pitched wobbly kind of noise when the gears are re-engaged?.. almost like the revs are struggling at the first instance of the gears coming back together..

  • @ lamestnicknameever dude if you didn't pay attention let me fill you in the German guy said how it works the rest is the racing teams secret. because each one is different from team to team. So they wouldn't want to be giving up their winning secrets, would they? idiot....

  • This video did NOT explain jack. Its all electronic. Its expensive. Its more guessing then actual science. The only scientific part is the gear ratio numbers, which there is no detailed mention of.

Here.s a solution for making a gearbox last longer or make it last 4 races. Downshift.

  • That is no driving with the paddles. Back in the days, they had to use the clutch and manual transmission, that was fun watching the races. Not today.

  • Those paddle clutches are awesome! :D
