Red Bull dominates energy drink, Xerox dominates copier category,
Coca Cola dominates cola category, Domino's dominates home delivery pizza.

Why? Perhaps, there are many reasons. Yet, the most important step these brands took was to create a category and developed brands based on these categories.

  • This is very logical. Most people make dicisions before having a need. Some people say I never drink water when I am thirsty, just cola or fanta. Those products are TOM or Top of mind products. They skip the category and associate the need with the brand directly. But this is an example in basic needs. There are more complicated decision making processes for other products and services.
