A review of the netbook edition of Pinguy OS known as Ping-Eee OS. Overall, a killer netbook/laptop distro, taking the excellent Pinguy OS and adapting it to provide a rounded yet elegant operating system for the netbook and laptop. Definitely recommended.
==Quick stats==
-Based on Ubuntu 11.04 and Pinguy OS
-Kernel 2.6.38
-Downgraded Compiz for better performance and less bugs
-Gnome 2.32
-Best of the breed apps; fully functional out of the box
-Fantastic power management
-Most of the custom tweaks from Pinguy OS

===Benchmarks (not super serious)===

25 seconds
GDM Login speed:
8 seconds
Firefox 5 cold launch speed:
4 seconds
Nautilus Elementary cold launch speed:

  • im looking for a good distro for my hp mini, would you recommend this? i need a better perfomance for my netbook.

  • @LordMercury Yup, best netbook distro out there imo.

  • I have a full powered 14'' laptop. I see that they've stripped down the themes to save performance. Can I still install the original Pinguy OS themes from the repositories/software center?

  • @idennisping Yup, you should be able to. The theme names are 'equinox', 'elementary' which will install quite a few variants as well, along with the icon sets (Faenza, Faenza Cupertino etc.)

  • I find it a little funny how Ping-Eee's iso is bigger than Ubuntu's iso when Ping-Eee is more of a netbook distro. I have Ubuntu on my netbook, but am thinking of switching to Ping-Eee though...LoL and I don't know why.

  • @InfinitelyGalactic I was wondering if you could do a review of Desura. Desura is a Steam-ish digital game store. It has a Linux client!

  • @LordMercury You won't get better performance with this one. It's great for newbies, but runs quit slow on netbooks (if all eye candys enabled). Better go with LXDE or other lightweight desktop environments.

  • @InfinitelyGalactic I got an old HP Compaq 6720s laptop laying around, with 1GB of ram, dual core 1.(smth) processor, so it's pretty basic, would you recommend this to install on it? Thanks beforehand. :)

  • Good review, thanks infinitely

  • i'm running Puppy Linux on my Acer Aspire one. Love it, but i do like this. very professional review, thanks
