I am an old soldier. This song is so important to me I can never fully express.
somehow Elton John and Bernie Taupin have captured the essence of being a survivor or war/combat, and the sense of loss, and bewilderment that endures forever.
Thanks you gentlemen.
I sing this song at every reunion I attend.

@wags2010 - I know this is an incredibly old comment, and I agree that they're the best composer/lyricist pair of all time, but that's just it. Taupin wasn't the composer, he just wrote the lyrics as poems, and John put them to music. Basically, John is a musical genius, but Taupin is the "voice" behind the words.

@hankpac As an adolescent I was a big fan of Elton John. This song was near and dear to my heart because I used to imagine that was how my father, a WWII veteran felt. I never played this song for him because I knew it would make him feel bad. He pretty much kept his experiences to himself however I saw in him what you have described - the sense of loss and bewilderment. It endured until his death at the age of 87.

My favourite music of his are the album songs like this. I like most of his hits but not as much as his albums.

A touching version! What a lonely life at the end of the way for an old soldier! We are soldiers of peace, not war! Elton's voice express that!
