@qflyer yup, thats correct, as long as pilots of both aircraft have planned and agreed ahead of time, formation flight is allowed.

Rule wise, how do u go about flying in formation above more than sct cloud? coz this looks like an IFR flight?

@jmister22 This was on an IFR flight plan even though it could have been flown legally VFR (departure and destination airports were clear, but enroute was overcast which is what you see here.) We were on an IFR flight plan from takeoff to landing. Formation flying is not restricted to VFR flights and can even be done in IMC.
