Vertical Kicking (click link to see video) is helpful in feeling how much propulsion you get from a specific kick. If your body gets high out of the water than you know that it is an effective kick. If it does not, however, you can make subtle adjustments and see quick results.

You can do this with all types of kicking and can progress from a float belt, hands in the water, arms across your chest, hands out of the water, arms out of the water and even a weight belt. The progression is up to you and your coach as to what is best.
