I was very impressed with the direction of this movie in 1938 . Incidentally I am a Medical graduate from the city of Lvov former USSR , and it was a great treat for me . I am aware of the Russian Patriotism , time and again they have had to Defend their Mother land , from the Aggressors . I have viewed many Russian movies depicting the Second world war , i consider this the 13 th century , incident shot in the 1930 s , as the Best of them

Germany was associated with old Rome in the West, while Russia was associated with New Rome in the East, which was Constantinople. Alexander was an Orthodox Russian who fought against Catholic Germans. The real issue was land, just like in WWII. This film minimized the role of Orthodoxy because the Marxist government had been making futile attempts to reprogram the public about Christianity.

@lazer1million actually both.. set in 1938 was when the SS was coming unto Russian soil and this movie was to remind people of their history and past. Things change peoples change and not always for the best and we the people in this world end up suffering for not educating ourself or opening our mind's eye to think for ourselves.

very interesting... as a socio-cultural anthropologist it seems somewhat more authentic than the modern one made... thank you for saving some history.. and i know about the so-called propaganda films they exist all over the world and the usa is not exempt.. i am an american and i live here... all is same to me... i walk in love and appreciate all cultures who do no harm to others, but we the people in this world will obviously stand firm to protect our homeland soil.
