  • i do this with a much smaller solar panel...... 12 volts 80ma....... It recharges a duracell normal type battery..... However I try to keep away from batteries totally now...... I do have the rechargable types D C AA AAA cells that can be charged 100 times and save me money....... I currently have 6 D size 1.5V cells charging out the backdoor and used at night for light...... 2800ma capacity i think......good for you charging the once used type!! they should do away with them...

  • @vicmeuk Wait a minute, these are rechargeable, not "once used" type. These are not alkaline batteries. I don't buy alkaline batteries any more either. :-)

So the problem with these rechargeable batteries was that they had an internal short. The voltage was 0V and my charger would not charge them. They were destined for the trash or recycle bin. Surging them seemed to remove that internal short.

I like your night light idea using D cells.

  • @field16 This is interesting because these rechargable batteries are not supposed to have a memory effect like the old NI CAD type....and it looks like there is a memory effect happening with them thats stopping them from charging....This is very interesting indeed....thanks for putting this video online...

  • @vicmeuk Thanks. These batteries used to be in my recycle bin. Now I am powering two clocks, a set of wireless headphones, and an LED flashlight with them.

In your previous comment, where you say you charge "normal" "Duracell" batteries, what exactly are you charging? Is that a 12V lead-acid battery or a 1.2V alkaline battery, or something else? I would love to know more about what you're doing there.

  • does this method work for battery packs ?

  • @dankou1 It might, but I wouldn't do that. Sometimes in a battery pack there is just a single cell that is bad and the rest of the cells are good. I would take the pack apart and surge just the individual cell that needs reconditioning. That would protect the other cells from uneccessary abuse.
