  • Jose,

Thanks for the vids they are very helpful. With your help I've changed the water pump and the poppet valve on my 1986 Mercury 150 Black Max. Before all of this I could not run above 4,000 rpm with out an overheat warning buzzer. Now I can run at almost 5,000 but my temp guage still goes to hot. As soon as I let of the throttle the temp instantly goes down. The funny thing is that the temp guage seems to go to normal as soon as I let off of the throttle. Any Ideas?

  • @bryancheak check the order of the gaskets inside the water pump.. the impeller should sit on top of the gasket with the hole big enough to allow the impeller to spin.

  • Great video. Replacing the poppet on my Merc Black Max next week.

  • Jose,

Thank you for taking the time to post the video.

I want to offer help to others who may read this. The Carrier, which is the hard plastic "O" ring, is extrememly difficult to remove without damaging anything. I used a flat head screwdriver and 1 hour to cut through the ring to remove cleanly. BE PATIENT. Going back in was equally as difficult damaging one ring I needed a 2nd. For the 2nd I put it in the freezer for 30 mins and then used a 27mm deep socket to tap it in place. Easy.

  • @dstewart405 No, never run without thermostats as it will cause your motor to run too cold, which in turn causes it to run rich on fuel which can cause the ring grooves to carbon up and force the rings out and cause them to catch on the ports and cause serious damage to your powerhead.

  • Jose: THANK YOU. Only thing I would add is to start the motor before reassembling the lower cowl for leaks. I put the thing back together only to find that I had creased the gasket and had to take it all apart to fix it. KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS! Without you I would not try it...You give me courage and save me money!

  • What the hell is that thing you are utilizing as a ramming device

  • Jose, have you ever snipped a coil off the poppet valve spring to allow it to open with less pressure? If so, did you refinish the spring edge before re-assembly or use it as snipped? Thanks and great video.

  • Jose...After viewing your videos (which are great) i was wondering is it ok to remove the thermostats from my mercury 150hp and run it without them?

    Thanks,

    Doug

  • Thanks a million!!

Saved a fair whack of money by doing it myself! Without this video I would never have tried it though!

  • @jross68052 I would also recommend using some gasket sealer on the bolts

  • @jross68052 i would use some gasket sealer or Permatex number 2 on the gaskets to prevent water leaks. From a marine tech
