I made a better tank than this with 1 NXT set and 2 PF XL motors (plus a lot of extra parts). Check out Maelstrom by clicking on my name and scrolling down my uploads.

We did use rubber bands, the motor only pulls it back. If we used stronger ones the entire structure crumbled. The range problem also came from to much friction even after we used a ton of lubrication ;)

The remote controls are NXT units that are connected to the other NXT units within the tank using bluetooth
