The last voyage of Team Philips heading for the start of 'The Race'. We were riding a 'low' anti-clockwise around Britain in December 2000. This footage is taken heading up the North sea. Top speed down the other side was 36 knots. The boat was sadly abandoned a few days later.

  • i remember thinking when they rolled this one out ...hmm too big alot of stress so when they finished it they took it for a test around the Scilly isles in poor weather, not a wise move as you really have to know that area WELL and they had some problem, BUT I think what happened is they hit rocks but did not say that at the time and I think that weakened her, I will probably get roasted here for that opinion but..... C'est la vie

  • thanks for posting this video! This was a great design. years ahead of its time. a newer version would have curved foils, curved beams and hard hulls. but she was still incredible!

  • @element9977

     Thanks! I hope so to!

  • @majorminors @majorminors Thank you for your reply! good to know this boat has not been entirely forgotton!I too was only 7 when The Race was contested. however, it was recently announced, that in about 2013, Bruno Peyron is running another Race!!! Follow the action at the website. I cant wait! i will be 20 in 2013 so i hope i can score a ride on one of the no doubt extreme racing machines!! Hope to see you there! Sail Hard!!

  • @element9977 I agree, it was the best of them all. They should leave the designer alone, after they rebuilt and beefed up the structure when the bow de-laminated and separated, it worked fine. I personally like to see another race, starring Team Phillips II as I wasn't yet old enough to understand the race at the time it was ran (I was 7). If this ever happened, I would be interested in crewing. Thanks for your time, Roy Conrad.

  • Paul, I just remembered, You gave me the tour.

  • No I am thankful for the absence of distortion guitars cum machinegun drums.

Yet there is another catamaran film with Sting and S Wonder: a brand new day ,quite good.

  • I won a ride on this boat. After it broke they let me crawl all over it in the shed in Totnes.

It was a piece of art.

Needless to say I never got that ride. Bloody shame.

  • Cracking the whip.....

  • i have read the book 'the race' and have to say that from what ive read in that book and others, team philips is, in my opinion, the greatest innovation when it comes to maxi cat sailing. thank u Goss for giving us this boat!! its so good that as of 10 mins after i read the book, team philips earned itself the prime piece of real estate of my door in the form of an A3 poster! rock on! sail hard! no regrets!
