Isn't it possible that the wheels themselves created drag, but by removing that drag on the wheels you can get up to speed and gain lift? This idea needs an engine to be on though.
-
Another equally redundant experiment they did is whether a helicopter can fly if its mounted on a flat surface.
-
The reason is the plane doesn't accelerate using the wheels that are supposed to be holding onto the ground, like cars. It uses the propeller to create thrust which isn't affected by whatever goes on underneath the wheels.
Since the wheels aren't attached to any motors that help with the moving, all they do is... maybe, spin twice as fast?
-
Well he was moving forward which creates lift. The wheels do nothing for a plane but create the movement they need to create wind against the flaps/wings; just like the wind you feel when you ride your bike very quickly. move forward and brake, (which might be debatable with reverse-thrusters.) Stupid experiment.

@Conflab so i'm to understand that the entire myth was essentially about a few wheels moving in time with a treadmill? and i'm aware that the plane does not "push against the ground." i never even implied that. the only thing i mentioned regarding the plane's takeoff was air coursing over the plane's wings, which IS the only reason planes take off in the first place. this whole myth is just retarded.
-
@samugrose no, you misunderstand the whole point.
the myth is that the plane would stay in place; it doesn't because the wheels are free spinning. It makes little difference what speed the ground is going because the planes velocity comes from pushing air, not from pushing against the ground.
-
seriously.. this does not change a thing. if this experiment had worked as the mythbusters described it, which it did not, then the plane would roll in place, not taking off, due to no air coursing over the wings leading to take off.
-
It is the point. If you watch the "ENTIRE" episode, mythbuster claimed it was going to stay still and they would see if it would take off.
The first experiment, the plane never took off. So they cheated and make a really large tarp. defeats the myth
-
@smcudb lol, let me guess - you're a 9/11 "Truther"? Somebody needs a life....
-
That would usually result in the nose wheel breaking off from the pressure.
Wasn't the plane supposed to take off from where it was sitting? I thought that was the point.

No, the point is that some people think that the treadmill can stop the plane from moving forward, leading to it not taking off
