Toby has come a long way in a week and a half. At first, he didn't even want my hand in the cage. Now, he'll eat outta my hand.

  • Please Help! my bird is 1 year old she does not mind me touching her and she steps up to my finger most times. However, i don't get the same reaction every time! Sometimes she looks calm and play with me and other times she gets scared and start biting me! it gets me crazy I don't know what types of trainings I should try (I got her a month and a half a go)

  • @3o0d30od

I would suggest not pressuring her anytime she acts aggressivly. Not as if she is running you off, but just back your hand away slowly and continue to talk with her softly. Maybe even offer a treat. Sometimes cockatiels just get in moods (kinda like we do! lol). Mine doesn't like being messed with at bedtime. He will fuss at me, but not bite. Just don't pressure her if she seems uncomfortable. Hope this helps!

  • @1cockatiel1 Seeing how he is tame, now comfortable with me in everything I do with him...this method speaks for itself. I didn't show the first week of me just sitting by the cage talking to him and getting him use to me. A ton of non-hanfed birds are trained this way

  • My wife just got me a cockatiel for my birthday. I don't know anything about them. so I appreciate this video. Tell me, when they bite do they bite hard? when can I dare to let her out of her cage?

  • @7archers

As for letting her out, don't do it until she's comfortable with your hand being near her. Just as I did, wait 1-2 weeks before even trying to get your hand near her. Let her just get use to you, your voice, your mannerisms, etc... Make sure not to make sudden movements, yell, and stuff as to not frighten her. Then do all of that with the cage open for a few days, then add your hand in the cage (not grabbing her, just presenting your hand at the other side of the cage.

  • @7archers

Then, start putting a treat in your hand and gradually getting closer to her every day. If you notice that she's uncomfortable with what you're doing, back away a little and take it a bit slower. Patience is VERY important. You have to earn their trust and let them know that you and your hand are not the enemy, but are the ones who provide treats, loving, petting, etc. It takes time, but it pays off in the end. I hope this helps!

  • @wordmatthew Thank you! this helped

  • i dont get it. that is not a good way to tame a cockatiel... i give that a thum down!!!!!

  • @7archers

It does hurt a bit, but not bad. I've only been bitten a handful of times and none of those times drew blood. Although, they can draw blood, it just hasn't happened to me. But don't be to fearful of it, it's really not that bad.

  • @redearedsliderlover my bird can be quiet one day and screams constantly another day :P sometimes though he sits and laughs and sings :D which sounds very nice :D
