To those of you who watch my videos regularly, I think this just might be the best tone I've ever gotten...what do you reckon?!

This is a quick video of my "new" old wood 59 LP replica, with an old Brazilian board, old Honduras mahogany, old eastern maple top, all the correct glues, nitro finish etc etc.

The guitar is plugged into my Cornell tweed amp, boosted by a BSM Velvet treble boost and a clean boost

This clip was recorded with my MacBook laptop microphone and camera, so the audio quality leaves a lot to be desired

The guitar has a real bright (it would probably bite your head off without pure nickel strings!!), dry, woody sound. That dry woodiness is something I had only previously heard in the 50s LPs I have played...In fact, I think the guitar really does sound indistinguishable from the real 50s LPs that I've played acoustically.

It's a real light guitar too - weights pretty much spot on 9lbs with grovers, so I am guessing it is about 8.5lbs with klusons (I don't know exactly what the weight difference between the two types of tuners is)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!

Regards,

Johnny

  • I've never heard a replica - let alone a Gibson historic - that sounds closer to a vintage Les Paul. This is THE tone. You nailed the Kossoff tone with the "stripped" burst (the fiddle probably used on "all right now"). It's dead on. I've played a real burst formerly owned by Rudolf Schenker from The Scorpions and I chase that sound ever since.

I can't understand why you let this guitar go. And btw I'd like to know who the builder of that guitar was. I'm pretty tempted to get me one ;-)

  • It sounds like vintage. I watched Area59 youtube and find it also nice sound.

  • Great Video. If you want a more vintage accurate string, buy some Gibson L5 Pure nickel strings in 12-56.

  • @CJsoccer4 send me a PM for more details

  • @johnbeloe could i get the builder's name? does he have a website? how much did the guitar cost if you dont mind me asking?

    much thanks--CJ

  • @johnbeloe what pickups do you use?

  • @alanfenton100 nice...yeah I'm familiar with the Tbaks - great pickups

  • @johnbeloe i have a 59 replica made with Dave Johnson's stash to the wood was cut and stored in 1960 i love the brazilian board! it also has all old 1959 hardware. It doesn't have original PAF's but i put ThroBack limited Series PAF's you should look those up their pretty cool!! anyway nice blues.
