they were probably metal wrapped in cord
i know some fire swords have kevlar cord but it might have been something else
and they usually use kerosene

kerosene works better for me, but thats just me it depends lol or you buy them online its easier an cheaper that way:P

You use a square metal tube for the main part. Wrapped with Kevlar wick (available from most good circus shops). Soaked in parrafin.
