Theatrical trailer for an overlooked "gem" of 1950s science-fiction films, THE MAGNETIC MONSTER, starring Richard Carlson, King Donovan and Jean Byron. Produced by Ivan Tors and written/directed by Curt (DONOVAN'S BRAIN) Siodmak, this inexpensive programmer followed two members of the fictional Office of Scientific Investigation -- referred to a A (for atomic) men as they battle a newly created radioactive isotope that perpetuates and enlarges itself by absorbing energy. Told in much the psuedo-docu/drama style of Tor's successful, SCIENCE-FICTION THEATRE television series, the film is a refreshing departure from stereotypical humanoid aliens in green nose putty that graced so many of the decades early film and television genre entries. An earnest cast, headed by Richard Carlson -- the iconic embodiment of the 1950s scientist/hero -- and King (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) Donovan didn't hurt either. And, yes, the film's conclusion is built largely around spectacular stock footage from the silent German film, GOLD, but effectively well-matched to the newly filmed scenes.

  • I had an uncle who looked exactly like King Donovan. This is a wonderful picture that they built around footage from a German picture called "Gold". Richard Carlson was in every other sci-fi picture of the 1950s--and he was always good.

  • Fantastic! I remember watching this as a kid and having my pants scared off! I've been trying to get this one for my classic movie collection. do you know where i can buy it?

  • fantastic old horror movie!

  • I`m sorry that I did not see your comment until today. TCM showed it last night at 11:00 PM EST. I hope you were able to watch it. Lorraine

  • @Gemini730: That's today!! Do you happen to know what time it will be playing?

  • TCM will air THE MAGNETIC MONSTER on June 30, 2011. Lorraine

  • Yes, you can get this movie and not have to abase yourself to United Artists or anyone else. I just purchased mine at Monsters in Motion website . Now, I just wished that M in M had other great movies, like Terror from the Year 5000. :)

  • "Came Alive!"??? When we finally see the monster, it looks suspiciously like Loudspeaker Cornstarch. So many decades ago, were B-movie special effects wizards keeping secret their discovery of "living" vibrating nonNewtonian fluids? We're just lucky they didn't decide decide to bombard it with Alpha particles.

  • It is on DVD.

  • I used to watch this on CREATURE FEATURES. One of the most underrated science fictions ever made! Anyone wanna petition United Artists to get this on DVD? I'll take this over AVATAR, thank you!

  • Pretty much everybody has an uncle who looked like King Donovan! Glasses, hairline, weak chin ... or am I thinking of my aunt?
