In 1555 , Frenchman Villegaignon improvised a fortification to defend "French Antarctica". Taken by Men de Sá in 1567, this fortification was expanded into the key point for the defense of the Guanabara Bay. Fort Santa Cruz is the most important historical monument in Niterói (my hometown), with its dungeons, fortifications, execution sites, and gun batteries. This 16th century landmark is situated on a promontory from where one spots a fine view of the entrance of the Guanabara Bay. Tour guides show the Chappel of Saint Barbara, whose statue was destined to another military establishment in Rio de Janeiro. All attempts to move the saint were accompanied by great storms, which was taken as a sign to leave her at the fortress.
