Its been nearly eight years since one of our most famous sons, Sir Peter Blake, was killed during an expedition to the Amazon. Sir Peter is remembered for being not only one of the worlds best yachtsmen and a passionate conservationist, but also for his reputation as a great leader. And its that special quality which is the focus of a new book by marine biologist, and fellow sailor, Mark Orams.
Mark was one of Sir Peters crew on the triumphant Steinlager 2 which won the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, and also on both of Team New Zealands Americas Cup defences, in Auckland. Mark spoke to Allan Lee about Blake the Leader, down at Aucklands Maritime Museum, where preparations were underway for the unveiling in November of the official memorial to Sir Peter.
Postcript ~ You can find out more details about the unveiling of the Museums memorial to Sir Peter Blake, on www.maritimemuseum.co.nz.
