I just heard them today in Irvine and their pieces DO NOT sound all the same. Each composer's piece was noticeably in a different style. They even conveyed very subtle changes in mood in the Credo of Josquin's Missa de Beata Virgine, from a serious, somber "crucifixit" to an upbeat and joyful "resurrexit."

And they sound so much better live than coming from speakers.... :)

they don't always sound the "same" - they are just brilliantly consistent. they don't embellish their repertoire with extraneous "expression", they let the beautiful music sing itself.

I am a pro musician, I was referring to their bland expressionless manner of singing everything, the Renaissance had a bit of colour you know!!

I have about 6 versions of the Brandenburg Concertos and to some ears, they all sound the same. Some Palestrina motets are so similar that they ought to sound the same. It helps if you try singing it: Why do all Persian rugs look alike? I prefer the Tallisienes to the Monteverdi Ch model of doing this stuff; though Paul Hillier's various ensembles are very moving; I can't imagine these folk doing the Bach Motets for example, though it would be flawless.

They always sound incredible. I must say that they are in fact one of (if not the best)vocal ensembles on the planet.
