Hummingbirds are really fast, and do some amazing things; The males of some species perform spectacular aerial maneuvers, including high-speed dives at females and rival males, in order to impress and/or intimidate them. At the bottom part of the dive, the bird flares his tail feathers causing them to vibrate and whistle, making a muti-frequency sound that reminds one of a jet engine whine! When standing directly below one of these dives, one might think a bullet had just whizzed overhead! :-O

These two short clips were shot on the spur of the moment, the first with an extremely low-res camera, and the other with high quality HD equipment. Neither are high-speed (slow motion) capable so the birds just look like blurs... the audio is the most impressive part, and headphones recommended :-)

The soundtrack is an excerpt from "Sky Spy" from the "TimeShift" CD by Technician (yours truly), available on iTunes.

  • omg that is so funny.. and good job capturing them on film at such high speed.

  • I was barely able to follow them, and they just looked like blurs on camera... hopefully I'll get some better high speed footage of them soon :-)

  • Phenomenal little birds. I remember one "dive-bombed" me once as I was putting a feeder out. Feisty little buggers, aren't they? Ha. Amazing.

  • I'm completely amazed that these extremely rapid hummingbird passes encompassing fractions of seconds were digitally captured! A stunning bonus is the addition of the sounds made during these rapid flights! The informative captions are much appreciated! Thank you for this educational treasure!

  • Thanks again for visiting! =)

  • Eccezionale!!

  • @jcmegabyte Thanks.

  • Yes - that sound is made entirely by the birds tail feather's as they vibrate in the high-speed air flowing through them... Different hummingbird species make different sounds with their feathers as they dive at other hummingbirds. Very interesting little birds! Thanks for checking it out =)

  • Ich bin überrascht ist das wirklich vom Vogel?
