My guess is he has parkinson or something and he's trying too hard to keep his hands from shaking. (You can see in the close-up, he's shaking) So he presses too much on the thing (whatever it is) and brakes it. First time I watched it I laughed my tears out.

that there my friend is a wax cylinder invented by thomas edison. basically like a record sound is picked up, and cut into grooves so it can be replayed
that really sucks, BUT if he didn't STEP on any of the pieces they can be put back together, but it looked pretty shattered
