My guess is that it is chief cornstalk's curse but the government mutated the mothman from a normal man and they tried to cover it up by making the men in black go after that reporter because it was a horridble mistake :o

I am not trying to push my beleive's on anyone but if something so proliphic that has spawned best selling books and has over 150 thousand people wanting to know what it is about then we need to know,,,i hate the government but theres no point in trying to fight there power i just wish they would give us beleivers a little bit of proof because we dont even need it to know what we have seen in the skies
