This piece is "The Black Swan" from Gian Carlo Menotti's opera, "The Medium." This was recorded in Ford Chapel at Allegheny College (8 March 2008) as part of my senior recital.

  • I think. You didn't express this at all. Also, Sliding from the lower G to the higher G wasn't helpful... Dynamics would have made it more dramatic. Your diction was good. Also... This is an opera. You should sing it like one.

  • @Zenna135 To each her own, I suppose. People tend to be more critical when they listen to others performing pieces that they are also singing. Anyway, thanks for listening.

  • beautiful voice but i think you still have room to grow.

  • @TrilliousDivine Thanks for listening! Yes, I know I do, although I don't suppose it helped my cause getting laryngitis two days before my recital.

  • Thanks and thanks for listening! ^_^

  • This piece isnt a solo

  • I much prefer this with consistent vibrato throughout. Your breath support could be better, as well. I could be wrong, but it seems like you're breathing high instead of from your waist/belly. Your diction is impeccable, though! I can actually understand your high notes!

  • @tricy49 Well I know that the slide wasn't written in there, though it's probably common to interpret the music that way. When I competed with this not too long ago, my instructor just told me to slide. i suppose i could remove that portion from my comment. ;p

  • @Zenna135 the sliding from the the low G to the high G is part of the music and how it is supposed to be sung. just sayin. otherwise i agree with you.

  • Very nice. I think you need to work on making you're sound rounder and taller, we say that in my choir ha, so i hope it makes sence. Anywhoo, I deffinatly agree that you could have emoted much better. You looked scared and this song is an expression of madness. But it sounded very good. keep singing and you'll keep growing :D

  • You have a good voice! You remind me of Charlotte Church!

  • I've performed this song too in my student's recital in 2008 and to stand up in front of people is not an easy task especially if your family are there. Thou, keep doing the good work because once you get used to the stage you will develop your presence and sing with your heart like it is something yours to give to the people that are interested in you. Hint: Add a little more vibrato and legato notes . Find a good transition between the sentences that you are singing. You have a beautiful voice

  • I see some criticism on here... but honestly, I really liked your version. Maybe not perfect, but it had that creepy feeling I think the song needs.. a little unearthly, a lighter voice that lets the mind wander away over dark water while listening... rather than how some of the opera singers on here really just attack it and try and make it this bright, gleaming thing.. you rock.

  • i know how hard this song is. i'm an alto & i when i performed this 2 years ago, it took a lot of work. so, kudos for tackling this song.

i really liked your rendition! i think the minimum vibrato got the story across better and you enunciated very well. quick comment: with those last two high notes, one you slid to & the other wasn't quite as strong. i think you've got it in you to sing those notes. just relax, take a deep diaphragm breath, picture yourself hitting the note & trust yourself =]

  • I appreciate that you sang this with minimum vibrato, I have been searching for a version with such. Your voice is young, but with your training I am sure you will grow to even more excellence. Keep up the great work!
