Over three decades after a grisly series of murders in 1971 and 1972 snatched away six young Washington girls, investigators are still trying to piece together evidence in hopes of learning the identity of the "Freeway Phantom."

  • I am hoping that in 2011 that there will be new energy put into solving these murders. The blood of each victim is crying out for justice - KWH

  • How come nobody has caught this phycopath?!?!?!

  • Well, the killer may actually have been caught (but is in prison for other crimes). A computer progammer for the National Science Foundation was a suspect and was questioned several times. He is in Federal Prison and is now over 90 years old. - I can give you some links later if you want. - KWH

  • AND, I would love to see the sister of one of the victims slap the handcuffs on the killer --- KWH

  • The most depressing (and heartbreaking) scene in this video is the sight of 10 year-old Brenda Crockett's body on the side of the freeway .... all alone --- KWH

  • @andyrobinson1228 the wikipedia article makes it sound likely it was some guy in prison who belonged to a gang

I have been interested in this case for many years. A family member of mine shared these stories with me when I was very young. There are so many theories and conflicting information out there. I'm looking forward to getting the book "The Mystery of the Freeway Phantom," a case studies one of the victims family members wrote.

I read a very recent CityPaper posting that stated there is more DNA evidence from the victim, Diane Williams. I dont know if the posting is accurate because I read some place else that a comparable sample could not be obtained from the victim back years earlier. I still have hope and I pray - at least for the families. This is a Washington tragedy and will always be D.C. Homicides handicapp.

I am truly intrigued by your conclusions. While I do agree he's a black male, probably over 60, I can't seem to understand your intuition (or informed or uninformed opionion) as to him living 1/2 mile from the freeway. Truly with DNA he should not be that hard to find if he's still living, especially in the area. This case saddens and amazes me. I am filled with anger and resentment that he still hasn't been identified.

  • this is a black male...he's probably in his 60's now...he lives 1/2 of a mile from the interstate

  • truly haunting.

it's scary how confident he was to allow his victim(s) to call back home or write notes for him knowing full and well what was going to happen. as insidious as his moniker is, it's pretty spot on.

it's sad you don't hear about this case as much as the other unsolved serial killings such as the zodiac, not for the killer but for the victims and what trauma they must have gone through before and during their deaths.
