(Courtesy: Dick Dyszel) A sampler of segments from "Kids' Break", a half-hour locally-produced educational weekday show which aired in Washington, DC from 1980 to 1987.

Show producer Dick Dyszel operated all of the puppets and provided all but one of the voices heard in this sampler: The announcer who introduces the Chef Combo segment is Ray Freeman (in a fine Don Pardo-esque performance).

Kids' Break received several local Emmy award nominations and won that honor in 1984.

  • Actually "WOW!" was a separate program which also aired in the early to mid-1980s on Washington's WDCA-20 and was also produced by Dick Dyszel. For details on both programs, visit the KaptainKidshow website.

  • I am a native Washingtonian, and I don't remember this. How long was it on?

  • "Kids' Break" aired from June '80 to May '87.

Dick Dyszel was the producer from November 1980 until ALL locally produced programs were canceled by new station owners in May 1987.

You can read "More Info" in the right hand column to obtain the address of the Kids' Break page at my Kaptain Kidshow website.

  • Wasn't WOW! another name for this show?

  • OMG!!! I forgot all about this one. Thank you for posting this. MEMORIES!!!!!!!! (In my best Barbara Streisand) LOL

  • I remember watching this all the time when I was a kid. I was in a daycare center that let us watch this show all the time back in the early eighties and the kids would do a crazy dance everytime the music for "Word of the Day came on.

  • GEEZ this brings back memories

  • WOW, this brought a flash back to me........

  • The name is NUMBERS...NICK Numbers!

Damn...this is great!!! Remember seeing this in the summers, on vacations from school, and days when I was home sick.

Any of the PSAs? like the one about namecalling (BUBBLEHEAD!) or the one about passing the bowl of fruit? Those would be awesome!!!

  • OK, that's probably why I don't remember it. I was born in 1982, and I don't remember much of what happened in my life before late 1987.

  • For years I had forgotten where I had heard of "Howard Huge", and then of course by looking this up on line now I know. I really appreciate the fuzzy memories from childhood so thanks so much for putting this online and hope to see more.
