In New York State there have been nearly 700 reported cases of animal abuse in just the last year alone. Animal advocates say countless more incidents go unreported.

Across the country, every state has passed laws requiring sex offenders to register with police. Now there is a proposal for a registry for convicted animal abusers.

It's the idea of a local assembly member hoping to help stop repeat animal abuse.

In the long run proponents argue it will not only help protect animals but people, too. There's also a push by the Animal Legal Defense Fund for a national registry.

"The FBI has been tracking animal abusers, violent animal abusers, since the early 1970s because they have found most serial killers started by violently abusing and killing animals," ALDF's Joyce Tischler said.

  • If the list would not be available to the general public...will at least be available to breeders, shelters, and pet stores...so that they will not be allowed to purchase or adopt another animal???

  • @SeleneMarie08 sure hope so. Pray they do a National and would be nice if people had to pass that check like a credit check before adopting. That may stop some abusers.

  • @SeleneMarie08 I was wondering the same thing. Those are some of the key people who would be keeping them away from abusers. As it is, I have a hard time placing strays/ferals with people since I'm an individual, & I can't do any sort of checks. I end up asking all these personal questions, & I know they probably think I'm crazy for wanting the right to be able to come to their house to do a "pet check" at my leisure.

  • Absolutely IN FAVOR of this !!!!!
