Nam Myoho Renge Kyo - Nam Myoho Renge Kyo - Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō (南無妙法蓮華經, also transliterated Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō; literally translated as Devotion to the Law of the Lotus Flower Scripture and exegetically translated as Devotion to the Mystic Law of cause and effect that exists throughout all the sounds and vibrations of the universe) is a mantra that is chanted as the central practice of all forms of Nichiren Buddhism. The mantra is referred to as Daimoku (題目, or the Great Invocation) and was first revealed by the Japanese Buddhist teacher Nichiren on the 28th day of the fourth lunar month of 1253 AD at Kiyosumi-dera (also, Seichōji) near Kominato in current-day Chiba, Japan. The practice of chanting the daimoku is called shōdai (唱題). The purpose of chanting daimoku is to attain perfect and complete awakening, and have actual proof of this practice to oneself and others of the validity of the Lotus Sutra.

The phrase is somewhat difficult to render into English because each word or set of words contains a complex set of symbolism and connotation, and without an understanding of the semiotic significance of the words, the full meaning is lost.

  • why not just chant it in english? does it have to be in japanese to work???

  • @Buddhist1986 check out my blog. There is a post about this :-)

  • i have never thought about doing chanting, but i think I might try it out to help my relaxation. This may sound strange but are there any tips from anyone. I am also wondering if just listening helps?

  • @AnimalAndTheMupetts yes listening is very calming. but try it. Start with 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes before bed. After a week try 20 minutes. Try to build it up to 1 hour a day. But remember you can chant anywhere, any time. Use it as a sound to ground you and bring you to the preset moment.

  • @itachiwalksalone no need to apologise. nam - devotion myoho - mystic law renge - lotus flower - kyo - sound or teaching or sutra or voice :-) I will Direct message you a fuller description :)

  • When I first read about chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo I rolled my eyes and scoffed at the fact it said it will make you feel better. I tried it anyway, because what can it hurt, and I remained doubtful. When I finished though, I really did feel better like I was looking at things in a more positive light, and the more days I went the better things were.

  • I find that chanting is medicinal for me.

  • I've just chanted along with your video, got a job interview tomorrow and i've been chanting all week, went away from nichiren buddhism for a while but 2012 is the year i come back to it. I'll let everyone know on here how I do - hopefully the mystic law will be kind to me.

  • @4817Indian yea english version sounds like crap although it should provide the same benifit ideally.

  • @AnimalAndTheMupetts Yes,to a lesser degree.However,active listening is good.Focus on words.

  • @Buddhist1986 The original avoids confusion. It is unwieldy in some languages. That is what I was told. For me, the English version does not flow.

  • From the depths of my heart I thank you for making this great tool available to myself and others who understand the importance of deep meditation. I have been chanting for 28 years and live in a remote area where I had to establish a group to have someone to chant with , but they are young members and I need the power and strength of senior energies!
