At 2 pm on July 24, 2010 Pete Seeger had left his home in Beacon, New York and headed towards New York City where the City Winery was holding a BP oil spill benefit concert. Only three days prior, the event's producer, Richard Barone, approached Pete with the idea of performing at the benefit. Pete responded, "Oh, I just wrote a song about the oil spill! Let me play it for you."

He arrived at the City Winery at 5 pm. After a brief interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he carried his banjo and acoustic guitar on stage and began his three song set with a new song he co-wrote with his long time friend Lorre Wyatt entitled "God's Counting on Me, God's Counting on You." James Maddock played acoustic guitar. The next two songs were old favorites "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "If I had a Hammer." A long time believer that the audience is as important than the person on the stage, he had the whole City Winery singing along every step of the way. After the inspiring conclusion of "If I had a Hammer", Pete picked up his banjo and acoustic guitar, walked off stage and headed back to Beacon for dinner.

Pete's performance helped the City Winery raise $15,000 to help clean up the oil spill. The proceeds were donated to the Gulf Restoration Network.

God's Counting on Me, God's Counting on You was written just weeks prior to the benefit concert. Days, later a video of the performance was posted on Youtube and was picked up by online news outlets and blogs. Within ten days the video had over 20,000 views. After learning about the video's success, Pete decided he wanted to record a version on the Hudson River Clearwater Sloop and film a music video.

Lyrics:

When we look and we can see things are not what they should be
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
When we look and see things that should not be
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

It's time to turn things around, trickle up not trickle down
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
It's time to turn things around, trickle up not trickle down
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

And when drill, baby, drill turns to spill, baby, spill
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Yes when drill, baby, drill turns to spill, baby, spill
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

Don't give up don't give in, workin' together we all can win
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Don't give up don't give in, workin' together we all can win
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

There's big problems to be solved, let's get everyone involved
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
There's big problems to be solved, let's get everyone involved
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

When we sing with younger folks, we can never give up hope
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
When we sing with younger folks, we can never give up hope
God's counting on me, God's counting on you
Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through,
Hopin' we'll all pull through
Me and you.

  • Im a Conservative Republican for Ron Paul, but Pete Seeger has done more for the USA then either political parties. His message, while sometimes a little too leftist for me, is positive none the less. God Bless Pete Seeger.

And will all pull together And we'll all sing together

    Hoping we'll all pull through

  • We should clone this man. When he passes it'll be like burning down the national library, with the New York Philharmonic inside!
