Jerome Kerviel has put the sleepy French town of Pont-L'Abbe, where he spent much of his childhood, firmly on the map. Here in northwestern France, like many parts of the country, the man accused of losing billions of dollars at French bank Societe Generale, has become a national hero. Through his lawyers, Kerviel has told investigators he was convinced the bank's bosses knew of his bets but turned a blind eye. Lawyers for Societe Generale say he is lying. Nazanine Moshiri reports.

  • One narrative of this story is that he made over $2 billion in gains for the bank in 2007. Apparantly he tried to hide his success by trying to lose some of that money so his bosses wouldn't get suspicious. But instead of losing some of those gains, he ended up losing more.

Personally, I don't think Jerome Kerviel is guilty of any crime. I hope he's acquitted of all charges.

  • what a vista only the town ... the man is a cheat great train robbery remake ... trail him ... liar to the bone!

  • No one in particular, he locked in future contracts thinking that the stock market index was going up. His mistake was not to get "insurance" for those futures. He took more risk than what he was allowed to but he did not profit from it. He was probably looking for pleasing his boss and a raise.

  • I would love to know that who ended up getting those 6 billion dollars.

  • Hmmmmmmm....

Criminal or scapegoat? well, either way he knew what he was doing. Folk heroes do not behave like this.

  • For all that money I was expecting him to get a longer sentence.

  • Really interesting. If the people in France see him as a hero, that could mean there's been a lot of unrest with the public about France's banking system. Maybe this is something that needed to be brought to light so that France can make the needed changes to secure their banks.
