One thing you have to remember is that the test button doesnt actually test the sensing device in a smoke detector, but tests the audible alarm.

One good way to test is to grab a little bit of newspaper, light it (be careful, however), then blow it out. It should smoke a little, but enough to set off an alarm if you hold it up to the alarm.

to bad they dont metion pbde's and the other VOCs that are in those synthetic materials. Did anyone take tests of the studnets exposure levels? I would say the firefighter who puts it out easyily exceeded regulated airbourne levels. BTW he coulda used his scuba respirator but didn't. In califonia we have highest levels pbde in womens breast milk. Autism, still births, and cancers.

Maybe next time try it with non VCO materiials. Show people we can live/build better naturaly fire resitant bldg

Another interesting detail is how quick the smoke detector quits working (after about 1 minute) because of the heat.

This is why we have fire drills and test smoke detectors every six months!

I learned something important today, I did not know fire could expand so fast!
