The creator specifically said it's left open as to whether Spike died or not. Also, the books finished before they could get to this point int he timeline. So we'll never know, and it's better that way. Too bad-ass a character to die; too badass a death to not be his. Now he's the Schrodinger's Cat of anime :P

It's a crying shame the creator had to go and say "Its open ended" to shut up everyone else who can't understand what a beginning, middle, and end is.

As the others said, short and sweet. As to Spike dying, I felt he should have. It's better that way. When given a choice between past (Julia) and present (the gang), in the end he chose Julia. (He alludes to the conflict in his fake eye speech to Faye). When Julia died, so did his dream. What do you do when the dream's gone? It's time to put everything to rest. And Spike did.
My two cents worth. Also, it does make the ending more memorable, and have more impact this way, IMO

@Hylian100 i think ur explanation is right on and ur correct about Watanabe's intent, but u kinda have to think one or the other. personally to me he finally can wake up (so i guess he died, in my mind at least). but great comparison with schodinger's cat, nailed it on the head!
