Filmed using silent Kodachrome 8mm stock in the summer of 1963. Includes a trip along the sea front in Weymouth and a drive along the road to Portland via the causeway. The roads are full of classic cars although none are as old as the 1937 Morris Eight that I was driving at that time. The film was taken on a French clockwork Beaulieu MR8 camera with an Angineau zoom lens. It was expensive for the time at £150 but I bought it in a sale for half price. It took me two years to pay off the HP (hire purchase). No credit cards in those days! For comparison I was earning £12 a week as a skilled mechanic and petrol was 20p a gallon (4.5 litres).
Edited on my P4P800 Asus computer using Windows Movie Maker with a soundtrack generated by Magix music software (no copyright issues). Enjoy this flickery trip into the Dorset of yesteryear.

  • Love it, but a real shame you skipped out my house in Fortuneswell!

  • @ThonColinFilms Thanks for your comment. Where is Fortuneswell?

  • @ThonColinFilms Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately 8mm film only ran for two minutes before it needed turning round in the camera to film the other half. After the film was processed by Kodak it was split down the middle then spliced together to give four minutes running time per reel. This could be the reason your house was missed! Cameras and film were expensive in those days, my Beauliue (French) camera costing £75 at a time when £12 a week was a good wage!

  • Thank's DavesHome for your comment, I do my best.

Nobody has commented on the brief glimpse of the gorgeous girl driving the old Morris car along the road to Portland. She has been my wife for nearly 46 years.

  • What other video's do you have?

  • Some from east coast resorts in the 60's and 70's. Also films of other places inland: Kimpton, Stopsley etc( where I once lived). I have yet to convert these to video but will do so in due course.

  • @kafcan just as you drive up the hill onto the top of Portland, there were a number of cuts in the film; in one of them was my house, so it was skipped in the film! :(

  • I first went to Weymouth in 1967 as an apprentice with the UKAEA at Winfrith Heath, we lived at Egdon Hall hostel in Lynch lane. Although this was filmed 4 yrs earlier than when I was first there, it was exactly as I remember it !

Thanks you so much for the memories !

  • Excellent. I go to weymouth every year, Waterloo place, and always go to pulpit rock, nothe gardens and chesil beach....and a pint of Silent Knight doesnt go amiss either...

  • Absolutely brilliant job!

  • 58 secs is on Abbotsbury rd, & filmed right outside where i lived no 13. Although this was filmed 11 years before i was born. Fantastic!
