Well, Barbara, I can recall quite clearly (as a ten-year-old in 1965) that more and more U.S. troops were being sent to Vietnam in the year this song hit the charts. Allen Ginsberg called it the "dirty little war", which was later used in a song from the 1968 musical "Hair", "Three-Five-Zero-Zero". The mid-to-late-Sixties were chock-full of antiwar pop and folk songs ("Eve of Destruction", "Universal Soldier", etc.) that I loved and that have long since become classics). Just sayin'.

I really like and love this Bacharach and David song and I think that what the world needs now and for always is love, nevertheless the song is very realistic since it mentions that´s the only thing that there´s just too little of, a pity.
